Pup and Pop Get Wet
by Jane E. Gerver
It is a wet day. Wet wet wet.
"I want to play" says Pup.
"Not today," says Pop.
Pup runs out.
Pop runs up.
Pop gets Pup's coat. Pop gets Pup's boots.
Pop runs down.
Pup puts on his coat. Pup puts on his boots.
"You are wet," says Pup.
Pop gets his coat. Pop gets his boots.
And Pup and Pop play on this wet, wet day.

It rained all day! Well, the majority of the day, at least. It really cooled off outside. I wore a long sleeve shirt and capris. MB is in Botswana this week and Ilga left today for Caprivi with her old house mates, and so it was just me, Kirsten, Bianca, and Brian at the center today. Everything ran pretty smoothly. I think there were less kids because of the rain, or maybe it just seemed like less because most of them were playing games or doing puzzles in the big room, and I spent a lot of time outside with Rozein, Tete, Salomi, and some of the other older children. We also left early, at 10 to 5pm, because the alarm had to be set and everything closed up- something that MB usually does.
I played Hali Galli, UNO, and Sorry! all day. Kirsten has been surveying the kids about their schooling, or lack there of, for her University research project, so she spent most of the day with the older boys. The kids were served soup and then hot bowls of rice for lunch today. Salomi let me try her rice, and it was actually very good. Rozein, Tete, and I spent the end of the afternoon playing UNO and drawing pictures together.
When it was time to clean up, I asked a group of kids playing dominoes outside to please put everything away. When they told me they were just finishing a game, I told them that they needed to hurry up because we were closing early. After a few minutes they hadn't moved, and so I came over and told them they had to end now. They got up, frustrated, and started walking away. I said to them, "I didn't play with these dominoes, so I don't think I should have to clean them up". Tete was standing next to me and started putting the dominoes in the box, and I said, "And neither did Tete, so she shouldn't be cleaning this up either". I pulled Tete away and brought some chairs inside. As I was leaving the big room, Tete and Meroldi came up to me and told me that Rita, one of the girls who had been playing dominoes, had cursed at me in Damara when I told Tete she didn't have to clean up the mess. I was so surprised because normally Rita is a really sweet girl. For some reason, I was really hurt by the situation. I don't normally care when the kids are rude to me, but I spent a lot of time with Rita and the St. Paul's girls on Wednesday, and I guess I was just really upset that she lashed out at me like that.
It's still rainy. Tomorrow I leave at 8am for Etosha. Hopefully it won't be too rainy up there, or I may not see very many animals. I won't have a computer until Monday night, so don't freak out when I don't blog tomorrow.
:)

LOL
You mean the kids didn't do what you asked them to? Like cleaning up when they are finished playing (I write a note to myself about this).
HUH, you were HURT when one of the children swore at you when you asked for their help? (I write another note to myself about this).
WOW, you ended up cleaning up someone else's mess! (One more note to myself.)
I can't believe how much you have grown on this trip. I hope you never shower again -- I don't want the magic to wash away.
I am going to remember all this -- I took notes!
Hey Katrina...you don't know me, but I work with The Bank at The Firm, and he told us all about what you're doing over there. I think it's fantastic what you're doing, and definitely not something I would've done at 17.
I'm writing because I heard what happened with the shoes you tried to bring over there for the kids, and I assembled a few people who want to help you out. We were wondering if it would be better to collect sneakers or maybe even buy them Crocs, since they're comfortable and waterproof. Let me know, as well as where to send it to you: ngiglia@deloitte.com
me gracie bell and alexa went to the spice girls concert on thursday night and kept saying how much we missed you and wished you were there with us because you would have made it even that much better!
<3 miss you not like lipton noodles but more like stuff..
KJ,
Your process is amazing to share through your blog. Keep 'em coming! I can't wait to read all about your side trips. It's Sunday here, so you won't be back on again for almost two more days.
Keep your head up and remember the structure you're aiming for will sink in somewhere, somehow, even if the kids are cussing you while it's happening.
Love ya!
